(A) Mild Inconvenience

What is classified as ‘abject’ has been fiercely contested due to the self-questioning that it facilitates. Defined as completely without pride or dignity, the ‘abject’ is deeply personal, often manifesting through lived experience and shaped by cultural perspectives. The theme of the ‘abject’ provides a uniting undertow in (A) Mild Inconvenience, exploring value, disposability, resurrection, invasion, utility and sympathy.

Emphasising the importance of materiality, sound and space, the artists merge found and made plastics, natural fibres, wood and clay to examine feelings of abjection. Investigating their shared experiences, this exhibition awkwardly stumbles into questioning what even is ‘abject’ in an all-consuming culture that seeks to aestheticise, beautify and exhibit all aspects of life?

(A) Mild Inconvenience provides an unfamiliar perspective of abject art, questioning and diffusing its historically repulsive intentions.
